Madame Pop-up – Bookmaking with Lise Melhorn-Boe 

Give your students the opportunity to express their ideas through the creation of pop-up bookmaking.  All projects are cross-curricular using visual imagery, design technology, storytelling and writing skills.   Lise’s workshops can be adapted so that children at all levels of ability and stages of development can engage in creative paper invention.   

A One-Day or Evening to One-Week Workshop !  

 

WORKSHOPS 

Name of Workshop: Pop-up Cards

Description: Madame Pop-up will teach a few simple pop-up techniques which can be used to make greeting cards. Workshop can be adapted for a specific holiday/celebration, and for various age groups, including parents and teachers.  The techniques can also be adapted for use in Science Fair displays.

Time required: 2-3 hours

Number of Students: 30 maximum, if one class, with classroom teacher and parent volunteer(s)
15 maximum if a mixed group, taken out of their classrooms

Grade level: K-8

Cost: $70-$100 (plus travel expenses)

 

Name of Workshop: Pop-up Books

Description: Madame Pop-up will lead the students through the process of making a pop-up book, from learning pop-up techniques, planning the layout of the pages, page design, cover design and book construction. The theme can be cross-curricular, tying into Social Studies, Language Arts, Math or Science.

Lise Melhorn-Boe has experience working with teachers at all levels to help choose the most appropriate curricular link.

Time required: 10-12 hours

Number of Students: One class with the classroom teacher and EA(s—parent volunteers always welcome!

Grade level: 1-6

Cost: $500 or $400 each for 2 classes

 

 

Name of Workshop: Flag Books

Description:  A flag book (see image) has small pages (flags) flying off an accordion spine. It’s great for topics that contain two or three levels, such as the food chain. Lise Melhorn-Boe has also used the flag book format, in a Grade Four class, for portraying Canada, with the Yukon, NWT and Iqualuit across the top and the provinces on the bottom two levels.

Time required: 3-5 hours

Number of Students: One class with the classroom teacher and EA(s—parent volunteers always welcome!

Grade level: 3-6

Cost: $250 or $200 each for two classes.

 

Name of Workshop: Tri-hexaflexagons

Description:  Flexagons are flat models made from folded strips of paper that can be flexed to reveal a number of hidden faces.

Time required: 3-5 hours

Number of Students: One class with the classroom teacher and EA(s—parent volunteers always welcome!

Grade level: 4-8

Cost: Negotiable, depending on content.
