Westfield Heritage Village Education Programs
Westfield’s Education Programs Learn about the past in an immersive, multi-sensory environment that makes history come alive through hands-on activities and memorable experiences. All programs are developed with reference to the learning objectives outlined in the Ontario Curriculum. Program fees are $5.50 per student, and $11.00 for a full day program. There is no charge for teachers or supervising adults. Westfield has a three week cancellation policy.
The Sweet Taste of Spring – Maple Syrup There’s nothing quite so Canadian as the sweet taste of maple syrup! Students will learn how early European settlers were taught to make maple syrup by Native Canadians, the techniques of pioneer Canadians, and how maple syrup is made today. Mmm! Offered mornings or afternoons in March. 10:00 – 11:30 or 12:30 – 2:00
Down on the Farm – Pioneers Experience the joys and trials of pioneer life in Upper Canada with a visit to an early log home, straw-filled barn, rustic country inn and one room log schoolhouse. This program involves fun activities to help students learn about the many factors that impacted Upper Canadians farm families. Offered mornings 10:00 – 11:30
Town Life What was it like to live in a small town in Canada during the mid-late 19th century? Students will have an opportunity to learn about the responsibilities and expectations of a child in a Confederation-era home, the central importance of a general store, the impact of railways on small communities and the development and popularity of motion pictures at the turn of the century. Offered afternoons 12:30 – 2:00
Child’s Christmas Westfield’s beautifully decorated village is the setting for learning about how early Canadians prepared for Christmas. Students will visit a log home and discover traditional decorating techniques and Christmas foods. A stop at the Cathcart School will be an opportunity to create a lovely take-home holiday craft. At the Mountsberg Church, students will stage a traditional play, based on the original Christmas story. Offered mornings 10:00 – 11:30 or afternoons 12:30 – 2:00, in Decemeber
Westfield’s summer program is designed to be a balance of education and fun. We are committed to offering a unique, engaging environment where people of all ages can explore, imagine and discover. The Summer Time Traveller program can be booked as a half day or a full day. The morning program, Summer Time Traveller 1, is offered 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. and is an opportunity to experienced both work and play of rural Ontario in earlier times. The afternoon program, Summer Time Traveller II, is offered 12:30 – 2:00, and allows participants to discover aspects of village life in the 19th century. Program is offered in July and August.
