HIGH FIVE training is a great way to link your curriculum (i.e. Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program) with tangible job skills and knowledge that students can use in part-time, summer, or future career opportunities! Founded by Parks and Recreation Ontario, HIGH FIVE® is a quality standard that works with hundreds of organizations (such as schools, municipalities, Boys and Girls Clubs, sport clubs, etc.) all over Canada helping them create positive experiences for children. The HIGH FIVE Standard ensures organizations running programs for kids are using best practices in training, program assessment and risk management. Students walk away from this in-school field trip with a nationally recognized certification for working with children, and valuable job-skills including program planning, communication, teamwork and problem solving. Two recommended HIGH FIVE trainings for students are:
- Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD): This one day training allows students to understand what they need to do to ensure children’s social, emotional and cognitive needs are met. Students learn activities and gain knowledge, tips and resources to enhance children’s programs as well as their relationships with children and other staff members. Topics also include bullying, conflict resolution, physical literacy, children’s mental health and moderate to vigorous physical activity.
- HIGH FIVE Sport: This 5-hour training focuses on the social, emotional, and cognitive development and wellbeing of athletes. The training is based in research and has been designed to help students looking to get involved in competitive coaching effectively handle top coaching dilemmas such as dealing with parents, keeping the child's interest, ensuring fair play and an emotionally safe environment.
Students who complete either of the two trainings above receive free access to Healthy Minds for Healthy Children – HIGH FIVE's online training and resource devoted to supporting children's mental health. For Educators: Are you a teacher looking for additional training and expertise on mental health for you and your team? HIGH FIVE's Strengthening Children's Mental Health (SCMH) training, developed in collaboration with Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Ontario, gives teachers a common language when talking about mental health, raises comfort level for educators when discussing various mental health conditions, as well as knowledge on how to navigate challenging situations when dealing with mental health conditions. SCMH is also accessible and useful for youth who are looking for knowledge and tools on supporting children's mental health. Whether you are looking for e-learning courses or in-school field trips (i.e. professional development opportunities) for your students, trainings for you and/or your educator colleagues, then look no further. HIGH FIVE training has you covered!
